It's one of the most common questions at Camp Rising Sun: What huddle are you in?
While the response varies camper to camper, year to year, one thing can always be expected: the answer will be SILLY! As far back as I can remember, my huddle names from when I was a camper have been a little crazy (ranging from the Crickets to the Orangemen). Think that's still the case? Well, check out these huddles and see for yourself!
The FuManchus are our youngest campers - all rising kindergarten! These little ones always have a blast at camp as they make new friends by learning and playing together. This afternoon, they had a FuManchu dance party where they took turns introducing themselves and playing each of their favorite songs - it was a blast!
Balbos - Camp 1
The Balbos are rising 1st graders who LOVE to play and hang out together! This afternoon, they were playing a game of Duck, Duck, Goose with a twist! It was like the traditional game, except they had to name the person as they tapped them on the head. The Balbos are so wonderful!
Chin Puffs - Camp 1
The Chin Puffs are rising 1st and 2nd graders. Like the Balbos, the campers in the Chin Puffs are all very close! Today, they played a fun game called "Electricity" where they had to squeeze the hand of the person next to them while saying their name. It was fun seeing how fast the "electric current" could travel through the huddle!
Hulihees - Camp 1
The Hulihees are also a mixture of rising 1st and rising 2nd graders. Every time I pass this huddle, they are full of smiles and warm welcomes! Today, they played a camp classic: Link! In this game, one camper introduces him or herself and then a fact about them. Any camper who has this thing in common then stands up and shouts "Link!" - whoever stands up first then gets to take a turn. It's one of my favorites!
The Mutton Chops, like the Chin Puffs and Hulihees, are a combination of rising 1st and 2nd graders. This group has serious huddle pride! They were playing the the "What Changed? Name Game!" where they had to indentify both the camper in front of them and what changed about them from earlier in the day. These kids are SO observant!
The Toads and Yoshis, rising 3rd graders, are basically attached at the hip, as these huddles spend a lot of time together! Today, I caught them transitioning between Silent Ball - Name Game style! and Terminator, another camp classic. As the youngest huddles in Camp 2, the Toads and Yoshis get to enjoy being in a new group at Camp Rising Sun - so this is such an exciting time for them!
Koopa Troopas - Camp 2
The Koopa Troopas are all rising 4th graders. These campers love to spend time with each other and their counselors, Joseph and Hayes. Today, I was able to witness an intense session of "The Question Game" where players can only ask questions. Once you hesitate or repeat a question, you're out! It was so entertaining that I didn't want to leave!
Donkey Kongs - Camp 2
The Donkey Kongs, or the DKs, are also rising 4th graders. This huddle is extremely active, so of course I would catch them in the middle of a soccer game! They also have a lot of enthusiasm for basically anything they do at Camp Rising Sun! I love hanging out with the DKs!
Bowsers - Camp 2
As the oldest huddle in Camp 2 - rising 5th grade - it's no surprise that the Bowsers have a reputation to uphold and a standard to set. Today, they served as a great example for all of Camp 2 by winning the Spirit Stick in morning assembly. These kids have TONS of spirit and love to show it!
Master Roshis & Gokus - Camp 3
Like the Toads and Yoshis, these two huddles are ALWAYS together. In fact, most of these campers only refer to themselves as being in "Camp 3" because they are all so close and so proud to be in such an incredible group. As rising middle schoolers, these kids are way cool and are always really fun to sit and talk with. Like the cheer says, "C-A-M-P 3, YOU KNOW YOU LOVE CAMP 3!"
CILTs
The CILTs (Campers in Leadership Training) are our oldest group in camp. These are rising freshmen and sophomores in high school. While they still get to enjoy fun activities and games, these campers also spend a part of their week working with the counselors to "learn the ropes" and see what it is like to work at Camp Rising Sun. Many of our current counselors have gone through this program. Camp Rising Sun LOVES the CILTs!
I hope this little guide will help next time you hear the popular question "What huddle are you in?" - Hey, maybe we can even make a parents huddle?!! Regardless of what huddle or camp our kids are in though, I do know one thing for sure: they all make Camp Rising Sun the BEST CAMP EVER!
