Slip & Slide with Camp THREE!

What better way to cool off from this crazy heat than with a SLIP & SLIDE?! Camp Three had the right idea this afternoon, and they really know how to have a good time!  Check out these pictures and videos to catch some of the action:

Counselor Spotlights

Camp 1:

Chiclets:

Megan was on the co-ed cheerleading team at UNC and her hobby is dancing. Her favorite thing about camp is making memories with the kids and counselors.

JP enjoys playing the trumpet and piano, along with writing music. His favorite thing about camp is having the chance to be apart of a kids life and be a positive role model.









Tic-Tacs:

Katie will be attending UNC in the fall. She is apart of our swim staff, and loves helping kids earn their black band.

Blake (not pictured)has played basketball almost his entire life. His hobbies include sports and music. He loves EVERYTHING about camp!












Pop Rocks:

Kristine plays the trumpet , along with does arts and crafts, draws, and crocheting. Her favorite part about camp is spending time with campers.

Sean has played soccer all of his life, and loves EVERYTHING about camp! Especially soccer RANK.










Tootsie Rolls:

Adan is a para-trooper in training. His hobbies include dancing and basketball. His favorite thing about camp is making an impact on kids.

Amanda is apart of our swim staff. She loves teaching campers new skills in the pool.

Camp 2

Mauis:

Aaron played college basketball for two years. He enjoys playing and watching sports, and loves EVERYTHING about camp!

Ashley loves theatre and music. Her favorite day of the week is Wacky Wednesday! She also enjoys huddle cheers.

Balis:

Michael is our Archery Chief. He is great at teaching campers new things.

Ashley goes to Elon University. Her favorite thing about camp is dance parties and bonding with the kids.

Tahitis:

Ryan attends State University. He is our tennis chief, and loves helping campers perfect their skills.

An interesting fact about Ashlee is that she went to 5 different elementary schools. She enjoys dirt biking with her brother, basketball, and soccer. Her favorite thing about camp is the ability she has to impact kids lives and possibly make it better.

Fijis:

Chelsea attends State University. She is our Arts and Crafts chief, and is very creative! She loves getting to know the campers.

Russ is going to the University of South Carolina this fall and is participating in the Naval Reserve Officer Training Crops Marine Option. He enjoys rock climbing, working out, gardening, and wrestling. His favorite thing about camp is lunch time because it gives him a chance to get to know the campers better.

Camp 3:

An interesting fact about Morgan is that she owns a piece of the old field from Carter Finley stadium. She enjoys cooking and baking, spending time with friends, reading, and going to sporting events. Her favorite thing about camp is having fun!

Joseph just started his own photography business. He enjoys photography, and just plain exploring. His favorite thing about camp is RANKS.

Ryan Groover's favorite thing about camp is Basketball, and he enjoys creating new games for Basketball RANK as this sport’s chief. He also loves to make meaningful impacts on campers.

David Coover loves disc golf and soccer. His hobby includes long boarding, and he enjoys playing dodge ball games and soccer during camp.

Joe has never lost at arm wrestling. He enjoys computers, fishing, camping, biking, golf, and swimming. His favorite thing about camp is the kids!

Saying Goodbye

With sadness in our hearts we say goodbye to Sarah Johnston today, our Camp 3 Head Counselor. Sarah has been working at Rising Sun for years, and has become a personal friend to not only staff but campers of all ages. The connections she makes with kids is out of this world, some say it seems like they've known her forever. All campers can always count on Sarah to be there for them during the sad times and the good. She has moved mountains in Camp 3 this summer, creating a family atmosphere where pre-teens can not only have fun but also discuss real life issues during "Real Talk with Sarah". Along with that, Sarah designed fun activities throughout the summer, including LARPing, to make Camp 3 huddle time even more exciting. As a counselor, I have never seen a camp so connected as one unit. Although we are happy for her as she moves up in the Y as a Director, camp won't be the same without her. Make sure to ask your camper about the impact Sarah has made in their life throughout the years at Rising Sun.

Last One Downs A Rotten Egg

For the last couple of days Camp 3 has been working together in groups to create the best flotation devices for this week's egg dropping contest. Today was the big day where everyone could see the results of all their hard work. The counselors took each group's "egg designs" with them as they traveled to the ROOF on the YMCA! It was my first time taking this adventure....and all I can say is that it was very very high up. However, it was worth it in order to see if the eggs could survive the big drop. And outstandingly...many did! On a side note, some of the extra eggs were used in a very useful way as our counselor Jason got a messy surprise on his head. Oops!

Chillin with Camp 3

Today Camp 3 was visited by Camp O's middleschoolers for a cookout. Even though we like to joke around about them technically being "our rivals", everyone had a great time hanging out with each other and making new friends. It was a perfect chance for everyone to chill in the shade with a nice yummy hotdog, delicious chips, and a refreshing drink. I can only assume that the rest of camp was extremely jealous. However, all campers who have passed off an Alpha level in RANKS will be able to attend a cookout hosted in their honor tomorrow! Have a great night :)

LARPing....Camp 3 Style

For those of you who aren't aware, LARPing is a live action role-play game where participants physically act out certain characters. In spirit of our "Knights Tale" theme, Camp 3's head counselor Sarah designed a LARPing extravaganza for all of our middle school campers. To prepare for battle, Camp 3 was given time on Thursday to design their weapons out of cardboard. Everyone's creativity was very impressive! After some anxious anticipation, today was the day for everyone to show off their hard work and head down to the woods with their creations. The rules are as follows: whatever body part gets tapped, the player must lose use of it. If you get hit in the back, you're out. Everyone must use their acting skills by staying in character the entire time. In LARPing, every single action should be overly dramatic. They began playing with a girls vs. boys battle that eventually evolved into every person for themselves. It was definitely a funny way to spice up the day!

Third Times the Charm

Anyone could feel the heat in assembly this morning! Young knights and princesses were everywhere strutting their stuff in their costumes and cheering for their huddles in hopes to win the spirit stick, especially since Camp 3 had been the winners TWO days in a row. However, although it was a strong fight from the rest of camp, (especially the Fijis)...Camp 3 took the spirit stick for the third time. They definitely deserved the three day in a row victory thanks to their rocking cheer and rap. Way to go Camp 3! Camp 1 seemed to shine during the Wacky Wednesday costume contest, as the young knights and princesses were enough to melt anyone's heart. We heard from our very own friend the Prince and his evil father the King, who sent a human sized snake after the Prince in order to stop him from finding the Princesses. Campers keep cheering for true love as we watch the father and son's quarrel.... we shall see what will happen later this week! To put the cherry on top of a great assembly, we had another birthday pie on our counselor Blake. He however was not as lucky as yesterday's victims....for not only did he have double the pies, but his pies were filled with chocolate syrup, mustard, and ketchup. Yum.....

Don't forget to mark your calendars for tomorrow's Family Night. It will take place here at the Cary YMCA at 7:00 pm. Get excited to meet your campers counselors and figure out exactly why Camp Rising Sun is so fun!

Camp 3, Is the BEST!

If someone had a good day today, it was definitely our middle school campers in Camp 3! Their bangin enthusiasm during assembly this morning helped them win today's spirit stick. YEAHHHEE YEAHHH! Their amazing head counselor Sarah rewarded them with some afternoon time to play "Just Dance" on the Wii. If you've never played, Just Dance is an interactive game where you copy the dance moves shown on the screen. You can imagine everyone had some laughs! The best part was that it was projected onto the gym wall, making it a completely bigger experience than just playing on your TV. Check out how much fun Camp 3 had today, and ask your camper about their favorite part of this very special Thursday!
