As promised in an earlier tweet (www.twitter.com/RisingSunYMCA), I'll let you all in on the surprise that Camp 1 had this afternoon. Leslie arranged for a special guest to come in as a part of our week's theme: Where the Wild Things Are! All day long, Leslie told the campers that this guest was not human. You wouldn't believe the guesses she got! My favorite guess? An ALIEN!
But no, it was not an alien. It was a Bernese Mountain Dog named Lacy!
Lacy is a therapy dog who usually visits child psychiatrists and elderly homes, but today she came in with Kim and Peter to help us learn about dogs. It was such a fun visit for everyone involved! The campers learned the three types of "permission" that they must have before petting a dog. These come from their own parents, the owner, and then the dog. They even had a chance to learn the different types of barks thanks to a demonstration by Lacy.
After the educational part of the day, the kids finally got what they were waiting for: a chance to pet Lacy! First, Kim walked this beautiful dog down rows and rows of children, just so Lacy could get used to everyone's scent and meet them first. After that, they took another round so that every kid could pet Lacy. It was so much fun!
Thanks to Kim, Peter, and Lacy for a wonderful surprise, some really important lessons, and for the puppy love!
