During lunch today I sat down with some campers to get their perspective on Rising Sun in order to figure out why they love camp so much. One informed me that the first thing they feel as they wake up in the morning is extreme excitement for camp. Why exactly are they so pumped for camp? A camper answered that she can't wait to be able to get all of her energy out through being her most hyper self in assembly during dance parties and huddle cheers. Another pointed out that although assembly's fun, she really looks forward to all the new things she can learn from counselors in RANKS. Some of their favorite things about camp include doing crazy challenges for popsicles.....yum! Others said they enjoy playing Basketball and GaGa Ball in backyard games with friends. Another camper added how she loves being able to shoot BB Guns in Riflery this summer....in a safe way of course! When I asked about what they believed the most important qualities were in a good counselor, they told me that their favorite counselors are funny and nice. Deeper than that, they expressed how much they love when they feel close to a counselor through the way they joke around with them. They really appreciate when they can tell a counselor is taking time to get to know them as a person, and not just a camper in their huddle. They all responded with a big YES when I asked if they'd ever want to be a counselor in the future. As a counselor, it's amazing to see how possible it is for counselors to make impacts on their campers. I'm hoping, even though it's the second week of camp, that some of your campers are feeling those impacts already this summer!
Please let me know what kind of stories you as parents would enjoy seeing on the blog. Email me ideas at becca.rubin@ymcatriangle.org. I'd love to hear from you!
