Throughout the week campers and counselors have been going above and beyond to reach new goals, learn new things, and most importantly....have fun. After a mile run a few days ago, our Fitness rank kept up their heart rate by practicing their jumping skills. However, to spice things up, they tested out exactly what it would take to jump over a trashcan. One of our fitness counselors Jessica showed them how it was done. Joe, our Fitness chief, continued to teach our campers the importance of excercise by bringing in a workout video for everyone to follow along with. The kids loved seeing how high they could kick! Our CILTS (campers in leadership training) also went above and beyond the normal camp routine yesterday when a member of SPCA came to speak to them. SPCA, the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, is dedicated to creating a more humane community where every adoptable animal has a home. After learning more about this organization, the CILTS donated their time to make homemade dog toys for the animal group. Not only have the CILTS helped the community locally, but they have given a global helping hand as well. Multiple times this summer the CILTS, with their counselors Ryan and Deanna, have cut donated shoes to make them more suitable to send to areas of poverty in warmer climates. Thanks to the CILTS, people who can't usually afford shoes now have a chance to a better life. Last but not least, I'd like to give out a congratulations to Camp 3 for winning the spirit stick today. They have proved that a huddle can easily win this recognition more than just once a week thanks to spirit filled teamwork. Way to go guys!

Chillin with Camp 3
Today Camp 3 was visited by Camp O's middleschoolers for a cookout. Even though we like to joke around about them technically being "our rivals", everyone had a great time hanging out with each other and making new friends. It was a perfect chance for everyone to chill in the shade with a nice yummy hotdog, delicious chips, and a refreshing drink. I can only assume that the rest of camp was extremely jealous. However, all campers who have passed off an Alpha level in RANKS will be able to attend a cookout hosted in their honor tomorrow! Have a great night :)
Tie-Dye Galore!
The side hill was definitely the place to be today! Chelsea, our Arts and Crafts chief, stayed up all night making colorful homemade dye for campers to use when decorating their white t-shirts today! Not only were campers dying shirts, but many also decided to make some tie-dyed socks throughout the day. Everyone was attached to Chelsea at the hip as she continuously taught different shirt tying techniques. This way, campers had the ability to create all different kinds of designs for their tie-dyed creations! All of the campers were being extremely helpful during this RANK as friends were teaching others how to use the rubber bands, along with giving a helpful eye when it came to choosing dye colors. I can't wait to see campers wear their beautiful creations tomorrow!
Making a Difference
I can speak for all of the counselors here at Rising Sun when I say that making a difference in a camper's life is one of our main goals throughout the summer. Sometimes it can be difficult to go beyond the normal daily routine to make a permanent impact on a child, but from my four years working at the Y, I can say with confidence each counselor in their own way tries to reach as many campers as possible. I was lucky enough to be a camper at Rising Sun since elementary school, and even that experience showed me how much of a significance counselors could have on a child's life. For me personally, I can think of a few specific counselors from my past that taught me life lessons that have forever changed me positively, and my life would not have been the same without them and camp. Now as this summer's personal paparazzi, it is my job to capture these moments that other counselors are making with children and share them with all of you parents. I'm so happy to say that yesterday I had a front row view of our two amazing counselors Jared and Leslie working together to help make a difference in a child's life, and luckily I had my camera. This particular camper's mother emailed me in hopes that I could get some counselors together to help her son defeat his fear of the pool. Our Camp 1 head counselor Leslie tackled this challenge and began talking with the camper to try to help him gain some courage to at least put his feet in the water. Through communicating with Jared, our pool chief counselor, they worked together to get this boy to the pool. They convinced him to put on a floaty, just in case he decided to go deeper into the water. However, with Leslie and Jared's enthusiastic encouragement, the camper decided to glide into the pool only after a minute or so of standing on the steps. He then swam all the way across the pool with Jared, having a blast every second of the way! His smile reminded me of why my colleagues and I work at the Y, and made it even more evident that it is possible to make differences in campers lives here this summer.

Spicing it Up
Our Camp 1 head counselor Leslie decided to add some excitement to today's daily lunch schedule. With some help, she was able to set up a huge colorful fort for all of our young ones to dine under. It was called "The Parachute Lunch", and they were loving every minute of it!
Over in the gym, Camp 2 was enjoying themselves as they played "Just Dance" on the Wii. However it was not just an ordinary game, as the screen was projected onto the huge gym wall, allowing all of Camp 2 to participate and dance together.
These are just some examples of how we make an average day of summer camp even more fun!

Going GAGA for Gaga Ball
Have you ever wondered why your camper comes home covered in dirt? It's probably because they decided to play a game of gaga ball down in Hawaii (one of our outdoor fields). With a homemade gaga pit, campers are able to lead games together themselves. The main objective is to avoid getting hit by the ball, which bounces off all of the different sides of the gaga pit. Also, you can tap the ball when it comes close to you to try to get others out. The last one remaining is the winner! I saw some hilarious techniques to avoid the ball....campers definitely take the game of gaga ball very seriously. Apart from the game, campers that share gaga ball as a common interest were also building great new friendships. Rumor has it that campers will be helping repaint the gaga pit later this week.....I'll keep you posted!
Camper Recruitment
This morning during assembly we found out that our friend Lucky is looking for some members for his dodgeball team! He needs all the help he can get to win back the Y for our campers in a 5 vs. 5 dodgeball tournament against Ron. In order to beat Ron and his Kung-Fu teammate Ricer, Lucky and his dad will need to recruit the strongest campers around. I wonder who they will pick? Throughout the rest of assembly we all had a great time dancing, cheering, and even singing a song about black socks. Thanks to an adorable cheer, our youngest huddle the Chicklets were our spirit stick winners. Awwww!
Don't forget to dress up for Wacky Wednesday tomorrow! The theme is extreme sports, so campers can wear anything from extreme sports gear to outfits that represent their favorite sports team. Can't wait to see everyone looking fantastic :)

Just Dance Party
Even with the rain outside, campers still found a way to stay active. Our counselors Hannah, Leslie, and Deanna taught a group of us the choreography to Beyonce's new song "Work your Body". It was quite the workout! Check out the video below.
If you would like to add some of our other popular dance party classics to your playlist at home, here are some song titles!

Milk and Cereal
This summer we are continuing our tradition of super-secret Milk and Cereal parties. Campers who have shown outstanding respect, responsibility, and just plain awesomeness are picked throughout the week to participate in this secret ceremony. No one knows when they take place or who will be the chosen one. So, make sure to remind your campers to be on their best behavior! Once one makes it to the Milk and Cereal party, they are able to pick from a variety of cereals to snack on. This is a great way for them to have some chill time during camp with their counselor! They even get a spoon bead to let everyone know they were so amazing during the week that they were able to be a part of this great tradition. Check out some exclusive footage of the first Milk and Cereal party this summer.
Lax it Up!
Last Friday I witnessed an intense Lacrosse tournament taking place down in Central Park. Our counselor Derek was working hard to not only monitor the games, but also teach campers some things about the sport in order to improve their skills. It was great to see all of the players using team work and good sportsmanship throughout the tournament. They even showed impressive creativity with their brainstormed team names. I know they were having an awesome time! In the end, the Hopkins team won the tournament during the finals against the Sith Monsters with a score of 2 to 1.
New Friends
Good morning parents! While campers began to make new friends in their huddles as the third week of summer begins, all of Rising Sun was introduced to three new friends that will be visiting us this week. Well, Ron isn't really much of a friend, for he decided to buy the whole YMCA in order to transform it into a huge gym. His plan is to get rid of camp so he can pump iron whenever and wherever he wants. Thank goodness we then met Lucky, who promised to help our camp buy back the YMCA through a dodgeball tournament. He brought in his dad, Patches o'Houlihan, to help train our campers in order to perfect our dodgeball skills. Hopefully they will bring us some luck! Also, thanks to their listening signs and crazy spirit, Balis were the first winners of the spirit stick this week. Keep it up Balis!

LARPing....Camp 3 Style
For those of you who aren't aware, LARPing is a live action role-play game where participants physically act out certain characters. In spirit of our "Knights Tale" theme, Camp 3's head counselor Sarah designed a LARPing extravaganza for all of our middle school campers. To prepare for battle, Camp 3 was given time on Thursday to design their weapons out of cardboard. Everyone's creativity was very impressive! After some anxious anticipation, today was the day for everyone to show off their hard work and head down to the woods with their creations. The rules are as follows: whatever body part gets tapped, the player must lose use of it. If you get hit in the back, you're out. Everyone must use their acting skills by staying in character the entire time. In LARPing, every single action should be overly dramatic. They began playing with a girls vs. boys battle that eventually evolved into every person for themselves. It was definitely a funny way to spice up the day!
Royal Wedding
Who would have known Camp Rising Sun would host the second Royal Wedding of the year! There was a twist to the story with our royal friends. The King's loyal servant came into assembly crying over the Prince and Princess's courtship, for he was also in love with the Princess. The King tried to comfort him, and promised him that he has now learned thanks to his son that there is someone out there for everyone. Right as he spoke his wise words, a new princess suddenly arrived from the land Far Far Away, upset that her prince had left her. Luckily the servant fell in love with her right when their eyes met, and they quickly decided to wed. The King, now a fan of love stories after a long week, agreed to wed the couple. Along with the Royal Wedding, we had our first counselor challenge of the summer. Joe, Ryan, and Patrick raced to see who could pull all of the tissues out of a tissue box the fastest. Patrick took the close win! Speaking of winners, thanks to an awesome cheer, the Tihitis were able to get the spirit stick. Congratulations Tahitis!
