Healthy Living at Camp Rising Sun

At Camp Rising Sun, we always support healthy living!

Each day, Camp 1 awards a "Healthy Hat" to the camper with the healthiest lunch and snack, especially if that camper has the Fruit and Vegetable of the Week.  This week, these foods are lettuce and apples!  Here are today's winners:

Another way that we promote a healthy lifestyle is through one of my favorite Ranks:  Fitness and Nutrition.  Today in Fitness, Blake and Jessica took the campers up to the group fitness room where they had a 30 minute aeorbics class - it was pretty intense!  On Thursday of this week, this Rank will hold a Color Run!  Check back for pictures from the run!

***Don't forget:  Tomorrow is WACKY WEDNESDAY!  The theme is Christmas in July, so use your imagination.  I can't wait to see all of the wacky outfits!***

CILTs and Service

Earlier today, the CILTs worked on their service project for the week: making salvation bracelets for Global Hope India.  About 25 people from this organization will be traveling to India next week and will give these bracelets to oprhans as a way to spread Christ's love.  The CILTs had a great time getting involved with this and even made over 1000 bracelets!

It's a Circus in Here!

In Performing Arts this week, Blair is putting on the second annual Camp Rising Sun CIRCUS!  I stopped in today to see how the acts were coming together, and I can already tell it's going to be an amazing show.  We have hula-hoopers, balloon acts, clowns, and much, much more!  The campers only have a few more days to prepare as the show is this Friday!!  I'll be sure to post some pictures from the big event!

Working Their Way to the Top

Throughout the day, campers get to move from Rank to Rank, choosing between a wide range of awesome activities led by our counselors.  In most of these activities, like Basketball and Performing Arts, campers can actually "rank up" by learning different skills.  Today, I was VERY impressed by all of the Rank books I saw and all of the campers who were working their way to the top of their Rank.  Great job!!

These girls are learning to sew in Creative Arts.  Learning these skills will help them rank-up!

Like I said, I was blown away by how many campers are putting in the time and hard work to pass off Ranks.  I can't wait to see who ranks up and is recognized in this Friday's Rank-Up Ceremony!

Make sure to ask your camper about the Ranks they attended today, and check out their Rank book!  I hope you have a great night!

Merry Monday!

It's the first day of a new week at Camp Rising Sun, and what a holly jolly day it has been so far!  It may be hot outside, but this week we're keeping it cool with a great new theme:  Christmas in July!

We started the morning as usual - with an assembly full of singing, dancing, cheering, and FUN!  Our kids are always super enthusiastic which makes Monday mornings so wonderful.  We met some of the counselors, learned the camp rules, and had FOUR pies in the face!  Talk about a wild morning!

Here are our pies for the day - doesn't the shaving cream look kind of like SNOW?!

In the skit this morning, Santa Claus showed up with two of his reindeer, Mrs. Claus, AND the Tooth Fairy!  They were pretty surprised to be here at Camp Rising Sun, so check back with updates on their visit.

It's the most wonderful time of the year at Camp Rising Sun! Get excited for a great week, especially Wacky Wednesday where your campers can dress up like anything that reminds them of the holiday season!  Make sure to check the blog AND our Twitter (www.twitter.com/RisingSunYMCA) to see all of the other fun things we're doing here at Camp Rising Sun!

A Little Rain Won't Bring Us Down!

Thank you to everyone who came out last night for our "Where the Wild Things Are" Family Night!
Unfortunately, we had to cancel the actual camp out, but we didn't let the rain ruin our whole night.  Instead, we had a wild, crazy, amazing, indoor Family Night! We're glad so many of you could make it!

Campers and their families were able to participate in a bunch of silly activities.  My favorite was the dress-up relay race.  We put out some of our outfits and accessories, and campers raced to see who could dress up and reach the finish line the fastest.  At another station, campers could show off their artistic skills with Creative Arts.  We had foam paint that campers could use to make decorations for the table.  They could even create their own Pet Rock!  There was also a display of sculptures that our campers have been working on all week long.  We have some pretty creative campers on our hands!

These boys loved hanging out at Family Night!  Check out that face paint!

Sure, we couldn't camp outside.  But that didn't stop us from pitching a tent INSIDE!  Campers and their families worked with our counselors to set up some tents and a hammock in Alaska.
Check out this picture from "Man Time" with some campers from Camp 3!  They told me that they were up for camping out, even if meant sleeping in Alaska - maybe next time, boys!

While all of these great activities were running, we also had a showing of "Puss in Boots" on the wall of the Shark Tank - talk about a big screen!  Campers enjoyed snow cones and popcorn while watching this movie with their families and counselors.  I can't think of a better way to kick off the weekend than with a night at the movies with the coolest campers in the world!

Just playing around at Family Night!

At the end of the night, we said our goodbyes - but not before some of the counselors were treated to a ghost story (you know, traditional camp out stuff) by this camper from the Balbos!  It was a pretty intense story... this camper started out as a metal house, but then turned into an apple seed and eventually grew into a vampire-eating ghost!  Talk about scary!  Now if only we had a campfire, we'd be set for the perfect camp out!

Overall, it was a great night!  Thank you again to everyone who was able to attend - we hope you enjoyed the festivities!  For those of you who will not be with us next week, we'll miss you and hope you have a super week.  For those of you who will be joining us, get excited!  We have a GREAT week ahead and are so glad you'll be right there with us for it!  If you thought "Where the Wild Things Are" was fun, just imagine how awesome next week's theme will be:  CHRISTMAS IN JULY!

Have a great weekend!  We'll see you Monday!

Family Night Adjustments!

Hello!  Here's just a quick update on tonight's festivities!

Due to weather, we're going to have to cancel the "Camp Out" portion of Family Night, meaning no one will be staying over.  However, we're still going to have a lot of fun with some indoor activities, snacks, and a movie!  We are still starting at 7:00 pm and will begin the movie at 7:30 pm.  Family Night will wrap up around 9:00 pm when our movie ends.

I hope you all can make it, as we're SO excited to see you!  Drive safe, and get excited for a wonderful Family Night!

Rising Sun Love,
Megan
